So I have done it again, I’ve gotten myself another Xbox 360! This time I got hold of a Japanese Xbox 360, my first one! It should be my sixth Xbox 360 if I remember correctly.
So why buy myself a Japanese Xbox 360? Easy, to play great Shmups! I can’t really justify buying CAVE PCB’s for as much as 700€ to 3000€, the prices also seems to rise every day. Xbox 360 releases is probably the second best option until we see more PC releases (come on Degica! I will buy them all, I promise!).
I got my first Xbox 360 on release date back in December 2005 and it worked for half a year before it decided to hit me with RROD. Over the years I had to get several Xbox 360 consoles due to malfunctions and guarantees not covering the problems… When my forth Xbox 360 broke down and support refused to help me transfer my digital game licenses (EVERY XBLA games released to date) to the new console I raged and said to myself “NO MORE money to Microsoft!”. The next day I did JTAG my new console and stopped buying games. I still got my JTAG Xbox 360 and it still works, the only problem is that I can’t go online with it and since I want to support the game developers I like it hasn’t been used in 5 years. A Japanese Xbox 360 will be a new start.
I will connect this Xbox 360 to my Sega New Net City with my pad hacks and a Xbox 360 VGA cable, console will run in 640×480 which hopefully will work terrific with the 31kHz monitor, monitor will be rotated vertically. I own a scanline generator that I will try and use, not sure how it gonna look but I can always skip it if I don’t like it.
The external power supply delivered with a Japanese Xbox 360 use 100 volt, in Sweden we use 230 volt which could be a problem. The Xbox 360 I bought had a 230 volt power supply so I didn’t had to use my spare. I may use the 100 volt adapter later on (if seller finds it), depends on the load my converter in the cab can handle, don’t want it to burn.
The console were only delivered with a memory card and no hard drive so I installed a Samsung 128GB flash drive so I can install all games, it will minimize noise and wear on DVD player.
Took an hour to do all updates to the Xbox, I guess it hadn’t been updated in a few years. Shmups are usually rather small so it would probably be enough with a 32GB flash drive to install all games I will get.
I already own Guwange, Triggerheart Excelixa, KOF Sky Stage and Ikaruga that’s found on XBLA, all these games is playable in TATE.
Figured it would be to much hassle to buy from Japanese marketplace so I bought myself a US Xbox Gift Card so I could buy Bullet Soul and Bullet Soul Infinite Burst which both are region free (but not released in EU). I also got myself some games from Play-Asia, eBay, Loading.se and Stompp @ Arkadtorget.se.
These games below are already here or on it’s way. 🙂
- Espgaluda II Black Label (Limited Edition with face place)
- Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra
- DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label
- Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
- DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou
- DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label Extra
- After these were bought I got a offer on something great. What it’s? Will be a secret until it arrives, will do a separate post about it. ^^
I am still looking for…
- Shikigami No Shiro III
- Mamoru-kun Wa Norowarete Shimatta
- Raiden Fighter Aces
Raiden Fighters Aces is ridiculously expensive so will probably not get it.
I haven’t checked but I think I might be able to get some of these games on the Japanese Xbox Marketplace. Physical copies is still preferred, it has it benefits to have a physical disc on a old console like this but not needing to handle discs has it perks as well. I know there are more great shmups on Xbox 360 but since I own a lot of them on Steam and I don’t need duplicates I will skip them. It’s enough to own Ikaruga on 4 platforms… But what the heck, how many different Pac-Man games haven’t I bought over the years?
Will post an update when I got everything running in the cab.
